12 Step Program
Therapeutic Services
The 12 step model at Southeast Detox is designed for individuals to help one another achieve and maintain abstinence from drugs and alcohol.
12 Step Programs are incredibly popular for those navigating addiction because they can significantly increase an individual’s chances of maintaining sobriety.
At Southeast Detox, we believe that programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) have the power to change lives and encourage all of our patients to participate. Participation in these programs is anonymous and connects individuals focused on the same goal: sobriety through community.
What to Expect in a 12 Step Program
How Long Do Participants Stay in 12 Step Programs?
Many 12 Step Programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, encourage individuals to participate in 90 meetings in the first 90 days of sobriety. After these 90 days, many people feel prepared to attend meetings less frequently without relapsing and may then choose to attend only once or twice per week.
There is no time limit for how long an individual can be involved in these programs! Some attend meetings years after they have maintained sobriety in order to support their community and keep sobriety top of mind.
What Can Be Expected From a Meeting?
Make Amends
Participants are encouraged to make amends for past mistakes and acknowledge all can be forgiven through a Higher Power.
Receive Community Support
12 step programs teach that all individuals are capable of sobriety with the help of a positive community. Sharing stories with like-minded individuals can be a beneficial resource, and is a focus of many 12 step meetings.
Take Personal Inventory
Many meetings will encourage participants to take personal inventory. This means understanding the areas where growth is possible and noting the areas where there has been an improvement in behavior or coping skills.
Types of Twelve Step Programs
Southeast Detox utilizes the 12 step model to cater to various types of dependence. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), SMART Recovery, and Celebrate Recovery are some of the different 12 step programs we offer to help individuals through their recovery from addiction.
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)
Alcoholics Anonymous emphasizes maintaining sobriety from alcohol, taking responsibility for past actions, and the idea that personal recovery depends on an individual’s willingness to heal.
Narcotics Anonymous (NA)
Narcotics Anonymous was created specifically for people who struggle with substance abuse related to narcotics. Similar to Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous focuses on spiritual principles, and the twelve steps focus on creating lasting change and recovery for the individual.
Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART)
SMART Recovery employs the twelve-step model with the primary purpose of helping to control one’s alcoholism or drug abuse. Individuals in recovery are invited to find healing and community in these programs that center around prayer, meditation, and science-based addiction recovery.
Celebrate Recovery
Celebrate Recovery is a far more religiously grounded twelve-step program compared to AA, NA, and SMART Recovery. This program applies to all forms of addiction, including but not limited to drug and alcohol addiction, gambling addiction, sexual addiction, eating disorders, and more.
The Benefits of Twelve Step Programs for Substance Abuse
Overcoming addiction is challenging, and navigating addiction treatment alone can often feel overwhelming. Fortunately, Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12 step programs at Southeast Detox provide resources so individuals do not need to navigate these challenges on their own.
Create Healthy Relationships
The 12 step model encourages anyone struggling with addiction to surround themselves with a positive environment that encourages spiritual growth and sobriety. By developing positive relationships and hope for the future, individuals feel empowered to continue on the road to recovery.
Develop Skills for Personal Recovery
Our 12 step program aims to help participants progress through the stages of their recovery while developing skills that help navigate triggering situations. While in the 12 step program at Southeast Detox, participants will develop skills such as relapse prevention strategies they can utilize long after drug and alcohol rehab.
Create a Spiritual Foundation
A key component in Alcoholics Anonymous and other groups at Southeast Detox that use the 12 step model is focusing on a power greater than ourselves. Belief in a higher power encourages individuals that forgiveness and a clean slate are possible. Regardless of religious background, anyone is welcome in an AA or NA group so long as they are open to using prayer and meditation as a source of healing.
